About This Site

Thanks for your interest in our site. We invite you to browse around and learn more about our values and vision. But first, let me tell you a little more about why I created this site.

In some ways, it’s a pretty unlikely story. You see I haven’t always been a REAL food fan. In fact, for over 15 years I worked as a marketer for some of the biggest processed food companies in the world. It wasn’t until I left the industry that I was able to take a closer look at what I was doing and detach from the “Big Food” culture. While I still believe people ultimately have the choice and responsibility to decide what to eat, I’ve concluded that your average consumer doesn’t stand a chance to know what’s really in their food. The misleading marketing tactics and deceptive labels make it impossible for someone to really understand what’s healthy and what’s not.

So that’s why I created this site … to pull back the curtain on Big Food companies, tell you about the tricks they use to get you buying more junk food, and share with you recipes and tips for living a happier and healthier life.

A little more about my family, and what we’re doing …

My family didn’t start our real food journey when my son was an infant or toddler. Although I’m sure that has its own set of challenges, we started when we already had a whole host of bad habits. But to start our real food journey right as my son was entering his teenage years—now that’s a challenge. If you know anything about teenage boys, they’ve got a food culture that fully embraces highly processed junk food and unhealthy eating.

To further complicate matters, I’m a divorced parent. And while even married parents can have disagreements about food, the divorced thing just complicates things a bit more since there are different food values in each home.

Why do I bring this up? First, it’s to give you hope. Despite the challenges you may face with your family, I’m confident you can make progress. We’ve done it, and our situation is hardly ideal. Second, I think my experience has resulted in me taking a fairly sensible approach to food and the food debate. Not only are there a lot of really extreme opinions out there, but I also realize how hard it is to make changes in your family’s eating habits. So rather than go for an all-or-nothing approach (FYI, I kinda tried that and it didn’t work), I embrace making simple steps forward on one’s food journey. It all begins by learning more about what’s in your food, defining your own set of food values, and then setting goals that gradually help you align your eating habits with those values.

We’ve come a really long way in the past five or so years, however, we’re certainly not perfect. But when I look at all the challenges I face parenting my teenage son through issues like respect, drugs, sex, and encouraging him on his path in life, I realize that food is just one of the many “battles” I face. While I think it’s a very important issue, I find it’s oftentimes more about doing my best, letting go of perfection, and leading by example.

So no matter where you are on your REAL food journey, I hope you’ll join us and subscribe to our newsletter. Thanks to my experience as a Big Food marketer, you’ll get unparalleled insight into how food companies really work, and the tricks they use to getting buying more processed foods. I also hope you’ll learn some great tips and recipes for eating healthier, REAL food meals and snacks. Finally, we’re trying to create a community that supports steps forward versus judging behaviors. So hopefully you’ll find us encouraging no matter where you are on your journey!

  1. I read your book, Fat Profits, and that is how I learned about your website. I think I’ve read nearly every fiction and nonfiction book available on what really goes on in the fast food industry, what goes into our prepackaged foods, and how nutritionally poor school lunches are. After reading all this, I’m left feeling disgusted, betrayed and let down by some food companies. For many years I have pretty much made every breakfast, lunch and dinner for my family, mostly because I’m blessed to be a stay-at-home mom, and I love to cook and bake. But, there are many times I’ve fallen to the call of fast food, junk food, and prepackaged food when I just can’t cook one more meal, make any more snacks, etc. Your site keeps me encouraged to continue avoiding the call of junk food a little more with your ‘real people food’ recipes that use ingredients in my kitchen, as well as being appealing to everyone in the family. And, many times I’ll make extra of snack/baked foods and freeze for another time when I don’t feel like baking but I don’t want my kids to go grab junk.
Thanks so much for this site and all the informative links!
